Los Angeles Galaxy face huge Revolution test

As a youngster, David Beckham watched Revolution coach Steve Nicol playing for Liverpool.

Nicol wasn’t one of Beckham’s favorite players because during the 1980s Liverpool dominated the English football and left Beckham’s favorite team frustrated more often than not.

“When he was a player, I didn’t like him because I was a Manchester United fan,” Beckham said.

Nicol has carved out a successful coaching career with the New England Revolution and will send his team out against the Galaxy tonight in front of a crowd expected to approach 40,000 for Beckham’s first appearance.

Beckham played under Nicol at the MLS All-Star Game in Toronto and came away impressed.

“It’ll be nice to see him again tomorrow,” Beckham said. “He’s a very good coach and he’s done great here.”

LA Galaxy are struggling with defensive disorganization and poor results. The team hasn’t won since June 14. Former U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena recently took over.
