LA Galaxy, deal with Herbalife

AEG Sports, operators of LA Galaxy, announced on Friday the signing of a five-year sponsorship contract with Herbalife Ltd., giving the company the right to showcase its brand name across the front of Beckham's, Donovan's, and their teammates' jerseys. LA Galaxy will get paid between $3.5 million and $5 million a year through 2011.

"With the tremendous amount of global exposure the Galaxy is expected to generate in the upcoming season, the time was clearly right for a professional league in the United States to create this branding platform," Shawn Hunter, president of AEG Sports, said.

MLS became the first American professional league to sell its jersey front last October, and the Galaxy is the second team to do so after Real Salt Lake.

Mark R. Hughes founded in 1980 Los Angeles-based Herbalife International. It has since become one of the world's largest distributors of herbal products through multi-level marketing, with sales of about $3.1 billion in 2006 according to company statements.

In 1994 Mark Hughes and his wife Suzan started the Herbalife Family Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping children. The Herbalife Family Foundation and its sister organization, the International Herbalife Family Foundation, have donated more than $5 million to children's causes worldwide.
